GolfPass Grass Guru – Safeway Open

Safeway Open • Silverado Resort – North Course • Hole 4• Par 4 • 400 yds • by Eric MacPherson

Coming off the heels of the Ryder Cup, we make our way across the country to Silverado Resort in Napa Valley for the first event of the 2018-2019 season, The Safeway Open.

Honestly, this is one of the most vanilla courses on the PGA. Beautiful, yes. Memorable, no. That’s not to say this is a bad course by any means, and we should actually see some fun golf coming off a long break for most of the competition. And just because it’s not an upper echelon course doesn’t mean there are any shortage of good bunkers at Silverado.

This weeks beaut are the twins on hole 4. Two tiered bunkers guarding the green that should definitely see play this week. I like a small circular bunker, make it guarding the green and I like it even a little more. Throw in another whole bunker beneath it and I love it. There are several holes with small bunkers guarding the fairway at Silverado which made it difficult to decide. Fortunately, the 4th hole was first in line. Sorry hole 9. Add in the short grass of the collar going right to the lip, and what more can you ask for.

When Johnny Miller helped to rejuvenate Silverado one of the things he did was add bunkers. It definitely helped improve the course, but to call it a great course would be a disservice to the real GCOAT’s.

Hole 4 bunkers, enjoy them this week, because I guarantee when the Honda Classic comes around you’ll be asking yourself what Silverado even looked like.
