GolfPass Grass Guru – The Club at Nine Bridges

The CJ Cup • The Club at Nine Bridges • Hole 18• Par 5 • 568 yds • by Eric MacPherson

This week, we journey from Malaysia to South Korea and the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges. Ladies and gentleman, do we have a course to write home about.

It’s so hard to pick a bunker on a course where there’s so many revetted bunkers. Especially a hole like #6 with dual revetted “nostril” bunkers mid-fairway. Then there’s #8, with deep bunkers left and right of the green. When push comes to shove, I would not be doing my job if I didn’t highlight an ABSOLUTE gem of a bunker on #18.

First off, finishing on an island green is phenomenal. Second, finishing on a par 5 island green – even better. Throw in an all encompassing “beach” bunker and you have the coveted gem bunker. Not only do we have another genuine beach bunker this week, but it has some revetting. Revetting, which I’ve mentioned a few times (you’re likely asking yourself WTF is revetting), is when you stack layers of sod and build it up, creating a British-style pot bunker lip. If you aren’t trying to reconstruct the face every few years you can also use old carpet scraps. When making one in your backyard, I’d go with the latter – much more cost effective.

Invading grass on the water line has to be a problem too. If you hate weeding, I’d pass on a job here.

I’m sure fluffing this bunker is no easy task either. It’s not a wasteland similar to hole #7 so it has to be a little bit primped, even more so since it’s bordering a green. Invading grass on the water line has to be a problem too. If you hate weeding, I’d pass on a job here.

The bunker at 18 will be very memorable. Too bad this course is played during football season, because people need to see this hole.
