GolfPass Grass Guru – Club de Golf Chapultepec

WGC – Mexico Championship • Club de Golf Chapultepec

Hole 12 • Par 4 • 406 yds

By Eric MacPherson

This week, the majority of the Tour is down in Mexico at Club de Golf Chapultepec. If I’m being honest, this parkland course is not the most inspiring in the bunker department. That doesn’t mean I am not a fan of parklands golf. The ability to hit it straight while mediating club selection is my type of golf.

What Chapultepec accomplishes with the tree lined fairways, it lacks in the hazard department. The right side bunkers on hole 12 are this week’s best of. They are little sausages guarding the green to the right side, and preventing any errant balls from potentially going OB. It’s a nice course, but if inspirational golf courses are your jam, like Riviera last week, this one can be off-putting. Age and location have definitely prevented any further embellishments from happening to this course, it’s literally in Mexico City. Cool event for Mexico, and a nice course, but not for this bunker raker.

But wait, this week is a double week. The Puerto Rico Open is occurring at the same time. Talent-wise, the fire power may be weaker, but the course brings the heat. So tune in to watch the golf in Mexico, but check the landscape in PR, and I’d say you get the best of both worlds.

Puerto Rico Open • Coco Beach Golf & Country Club – Champions Course • Hole 11 • Par 3 • 192 yds

With the best golfers fighting it out in Mexico, the PGA B team is heading to PR. Golf and sun, all while being paid, isn’t too bad for the pro golfers not in the WGC. I’d do that in a heart beat.

Coco Beach is a resort course right on the ocean, and the bunkers are much more imaginative. The green side bunker on the 11th takes the cake here. A moderate par 3, this large bunker guards the left and front of the green. This green just flows. There is something about a bunker settling beautifully in the course layout, and this does just that. There are certainly more bunkers to gawk at here, but honestly we will all be tuning into the WGC. But when those commercials hit flip back to the PR open and you’ll see a beautiful course, that you can hop on.
