GolfPass Grass Guru – TPC Kuala Lumpur West Course

CIMB Classic • TPC Kuala Lumpur – West Course • Hole 15• Par 3 • 199 yds • by Eric MacPherson

This week, the PGA tour flies halfway around the world to Malaysia for the CIMB Classic. This event, similar to last week’s, won’t have much hype surrounding it, but the course will be much more fun.

The bunkers throughout TPC Kuala Lumpur are very unique. Not very often do you get to call a sand trap a beach and it actually be one – well there’s a first time for everything. The sister bunkers guarding the 15th hole are just that – beaches. These two bad beaches are ACTUALLY beaches. Take a look for yourself! The sand slopes right down to the waters edge. There’s no useless little strand of grass to save your ball from plunking into the water that would then have to be fly-mown by some poor sap in galoshes. Nope, these bunkers are legit sand up to the waters edge. I love it! Drainage is, and has always been, a problem with bunkers, and I bet with the Malaysian rainy season they probably see a few bunkers fill up. Why not just make them flow into the retaining pond? Problem solved.

This year, the turf at TPC Kuala Lumpur has been switched to Bermuda grass. While I think Bermuda grass is great, I’m a Seashore Paspalum guy till I die (only for warm season grasses – don’t worry Agrostis canina you’re still the GGOAT (Greatest Grass of All Time)). Shout out to anyone that knows the regular name for that grass, they are the real winners of this week.

With that being said, the way these pros generate so much back spin and this being a relatively short par 3, I guarantee you we see several  balls spin back into the beach bunkers on 15. Who knows, maybe they’ll keep going all the way to the water’s edge and, before you know it, Ernie Els is knee deep in the water, hitting from the sand trying to save par while having the lead on Sunday. But I digress.

Hole 15 is a short little par three with some of the coolest little bunkers/beaches we’ll see on the tour. Hopefully, we get to see a lot of TV time for these two…hopefully.
