GolfPass Grass Guru – Ridgewood Country Club

The Northern Trust • Ridgewood Country Club • Hole 7- “Stockton’s Lab” by Eric MacPherson

This week the Northern Trust is right in my back yard, Ridgewood Country Club. Now even though it’s not my favorite in the rotation, due to a clear bias, this hole and this bunker in particular has Tillinghast all over it.

This beaut is located on the right middle rough of the fairway; probably won’t see play, but if someone tries a lay up we could see some balls scoot into this 7 fingered monster.

Now, when most people think Tillinghast they think old American country clubs. When I think Tillinghast only two words come to mind – “ Bunker fingers”. This bunker packs 7 of those into it. I mean the guy loved bunker fingers. Get that grassy edge to kiss the sand. Easy to enter, easy to exit, easier to hit out of, harder to maintain. Not a chance he knew how despised bunker fingers are to care for. Those puppies fry up faster than a chicken finger in a deep fat fryer, let alone trying to keep them weed free, but man do they look pretty.

When the golfers are on 7 looking for that uphill approach just give a friendly hat tip to the poor sack that had to fly mow all 7 fingers that morning, and appreciate that gem.
