GolfPass Grass Guru – East Lake Golf Club

Tour Championship • East Lake Golf Club • Hole 15 • Par 3 • 211 yds • by Eric MacPherson

The final event of the 2018 season brings us to another Donald Ross course. That’s back-to-back DR courses for those keeping track.

This weeks beautiful bunker is the one on the new 15th. This middle distance island green wouldn’t be complete without a nice grass faced bunker within reach. Like last week, this bunker is grass faced and beautifully situated to the left. This leaves for a tricky out onto the green, especially if it’s in the rough, and the collars are running quick.

The green complex will get a lot of shoutouts from the commentators, but that bunker is the real gem. Just like 17 at Sawgrass would look off if that little bunker was gone; the 15th would look really weird with just a green complex and no sand. It’s the ear to the face that is the green. It just adds that little extra danger factor especially with it being a middle iron in.

Love a good island green to watch and play, but have you every tried to turn a mower near a water’s edge without it slipping into the pond? Not the most graceful of situations. Now throw in a bunker taking up some real estate and the rough mower over there will be making their paychecks, except they won’t…because they are most likely volunteers.
