GolfPass Grass Guru – Aronimink Golf Club

BMW Championship • Aronimink Golf Club • Hole 13 – “Blackfoot” • Par 4 • 385 yds • by Eric MacPherson

This week, the penultimate event of the tour season is at Aronimink Golf Club. Nestled near Philly, close to other greats like Philadelphia Cricket Club and Merion, it’s not easy to standout. Even with those monsters breathing down it’s neck, Aronimink does just that, getting back to it’s Donald Ross roots. It’ll be a treat to watch another northeast course before the tour moves south again.

It seems like every hole has bunkers guarding the right side of the green, every single one. No hole exemplifies this better than hole 12. With a large bunker – the top barely visible and bunker fingers dipping into it – this is the gem of Aronimink. I’m not even going to get into the debate of what constitutes a Donald Ross bunker, I’ll leave that for the architect nerds. Just know that this beaut is a 5/5 on the bunker scale.

I expect some to hit into this bunker leading to a hard out with a left sloping green leading to another bunker. Although these bunkers are semi-grass faced, a ball hit into it will definitely roll on in. Good green side bunkers elevate a golf course, but that collar, fringe, and rough between the green and bunker is what makes it great.

Bunkers on this course are perfectly fit to use as a dictionary picture for “bunker”, they are that crisp. Be on the look out for the weird green complexes between holes 8 and 10. Butt to butt, gotta love it if you’re mowing greens.
